Hey! Thanks for stopping by the brand new blog for Fill The Dams - a web-based fundraising initiative for the drought appeal and water conservation awareness.

I came up with the idea for Fill The Dams after reading many newspaper articles that claimed Australia was suffering its worst drought in history. The catchments are slowly draining with each passing day and water restrictions are becoming increasingly strict.

While the short term solution lies in us slashing our water bills (particularly businesses and industries) I feel the public water saving campaigns aren’t doing enough to influence change. There’s no buzz or hook, like the 40 Hour Famine or the Good Friday Appeal. The Salvos have launched a national Drought Relief Appeal to ease the pressure on drought-affected communities but something extra is needed to reach the really big targets.

With the recent explosion of tech savviness in Australia I thought what better way to raise money and awareness than by utilising the viral power of the Internet/blogosphere? And so Fill The Dams was born.

You can read the full scoop on Fill The Dams on the main website but in brief, the site is based on sharing some link love with water-conscious Australian organisations and individuals in exchange for contributions to three drought/water/conservation related charities - The Salvation Army, Sustainable Living Foundation and Australian Conservation Foundation.

There are two pictorial virtual dams, each to be filled with the advertising images or initials tag of the contributors. The greater the contribution, the more litres (advertising space) allowed which then results in greater exposure. The lofty aim is to fill these two virtual dams and raise $1 million for charity in the process.

Before I end this post let me remind you to bookmark this blog (or you can get the RSS feed here) and pass on the message to as many friends and colleagues as you can! Individually we can’t raise much, but by reaching out to your extended network you can help make all the difference in achieving the target.

If you want to send me an email just visit the contact page. If not feel free to leave comments on my blog posts or say hello in the freshly created community forum at Fill The Dams. I enjoy interacting with people and I will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Check out the FAQ for all the answers you’ll ever need, and don’t hesitate to be one of the first to buy some litres!

This is definitely a wacky idea and even though we are now well into Autumn, our country still needs something to ease the hardships brought on by the drought. Help Fill The Dams!

Thanks!
